Peter Potter (Anzac Day)
©AndrewHull,2006

Peter Potter stands beside the speaker in the park
And the medals glisten brightly on his chest
They speak of life experience and leave a heavy mark
On the heart that beats bravely in his breast
He rises for the tributes and contributes to the hymns
And knows by rote the role he must fulfill
He’s stood there many times on those worn and weary limbs
He leads us and the town remembers still

We remember on this day those who passed along the way
And whose bodies fell apon a distant shore
Who gave up their tomorrows so we could have today
It’s a memory that we do not ignore

I see Peter Potter nearly every other day
As he goes about the duties of his life
He does his daily business in an unassuming way
And cares for his ill and aging wife
He seems frail in the street with a plastic shopping bag
And just walking seems to be an act of will
He mostly goes unnoticed till we gather at the flag
Then he leads us and the town remembers still

We remember those who volunteered to rally round the drum
And we bow our heads in sorrow and regret
We remember those who knew not what their memory would become
And reaffirm that we will not forget

Peter Potter rises and delivers us the ode
He speaks of love that cannot be undone
That age can never weary and time cannot erode
In the morning and the setting of the sun
Peter Potter watches as we come and lay the wreath
And the corners of his eyes begin to fill
The old mans eyes are windows to the soldiers soul beneath
He leads us and the town remembers still

We remember with our children as we gather every year
Though the reason for the memory grows dim
But when Peter Potter fades and can no longer volunteer
This town will gather and remember him

I really enjoy your rendition of this on your CD Hully - you've managed to paint a great picture here.
