My Dearest Bess

Post by Dave Smith » Thu Nov 25, 2010 8:17 pm

My Dearest Bess.

The bugle sounds, the day is spent,
I’ll toss and turn in blankets lent,
Sporadic fire from up the line,
Tuck in, dig deep, my boys are fine.

I’ve had some mail from Bess today
“The children help me while they play,
They’re helping Granddad in his shed
And always come in late for bed.”

“They love it here on Granddads farm,
We’re safe out here away from harm,
They’ve picked some berries for their tea,
Their faces stained and filled with glee.”

“My Dearest Bess, your letters cheer-
me so, It gets so awful here.”
“We’re bogged down here in endless mire.”
“The ceaseless sound of canon fire.”

A SHOUT it’s time, Go Go Go Go,
What’s all the noise? Quick out of bed,
That whistling sound, it fills my head….

G/day Dave,
Think of the thousands of similar letters or telegrams that were received by wives and parents during the two world wars, and of course it still goes on doesn't it.
Good one Dave, it touches you just thinking of the great sadness there must have been all around the country.
