AUTUMN'S GONE WALKABOUT

AUTUMN’S GONE WALKABOUT

Jeff Thorpe © 05 May 2016

Two-thirds of Autumn gone and I’m swimming at the beach,
temperatures at twenty-eight and seemingly not dropping,
not that I’m complaining, more likely I’ll beseech
the weather God’s guarantee this show’s not ever stopping.

Who’da thought budgie smugglers the fancied clobber in May,
to be sunning on the sand like summertime’s still here,
something ‘bout the climate’s clearly gone astray,
what has caused Autumn to almost disappear?

April’s just gone down as the warmest on record,
the true three months of Summer extremely hot and dry,
if you see falling leaves in May you deserve a reward,
all this wacky weather makes one start to wonder why.

Global warming, climate change, call it what you like,
El Nino and La Nina, take your pick,
this year our usual cyclones somehow took a hike
and now it seems that Autumn’s got the flick.

What odds for Winter now that Autumn’s done a bunk,
Will it surprise us all like Leicester City?
Chances of a frosty first of June I fear are sunk,
souffle doesn’t rise twice, more’s the pity.

Everyone wants to know what’s happening with the weather
scientists and soothsayers in reply give different reasons,
for mine though it seems, until they pull together
Vivaldi’s our best hope to experience Four Seasons.

Very clever Jeff - especially the reference to Vivaldi - I love that!

We're the same here, but I'm not as happy as you are about it! I love Autumn - it's my favourite season, providing the welcome cooling relief after a scorching summer. I don't like missing out on it!! ;)

Cheers

I was in Bowral this time two years ago and I recall Sydney having days in the high twenties and maybe low 30s and people going to the beach. We've been warned it's to be expected.

Heather :)

Hi Shelley and Heather

Thanks for your comments. It's unreal the weather we're experiencing here at the Gold Coast. The water temperature is around 23 degrees and swimming even late in the day is not uncomfortable. Why you southerners come to sunny Queensland Heather.

Regards, Jeff

I really miss the autumn colours. :( ...Love that last line Jeff - really clever! The soufflé one is good too...and that reference to Leicester City was somewhat unexpected! :D

A clever piece Jeff. I put in an early order for winter timber for the fireplace . Should have waited. Doesn't look like we'll see too much cold weather.

You can always put Frankie Valli in the CD player Jeff.

I enjoyed the poem and think we are on the right track...let's do away with winter altogether.

Hi Catherine, Wazza, Vic & Bob

I enjoyed writing this poem and now some three weeks later it's still very warm at Tugun so, nothing much has changed in the interim.
Good point Waz about Frankie Vallie and the Four Seasons. And here's me having seen Jersey Boys twice.

Having hailed from Rocky I know what you mean Bob. The Causeway looks as good as ever from your picture.

We've had above average rainfall for both April and May; unusual for us - must have hijacked what you should be getting
