Bertie on the Phone

Post by Terry » Sat May 07, 2016 7:15 pm

With our recent delving into the intricate workings of Free Verse, it seemed a good time to wheel this out again.

Just having a bit of fun folks,
with a little tongue in cheek nonsense

BERTIE ON THE PHONE

Why hello Jenny darling this is Bertie don’t you know,
extending invitations to our pukka poets show.
It’s for the literati and a real poetic treat
and anyone who’s anyone is sure to book a seat.

They say we’re nearly booked out - there’ll be twenty there at least,
and after entertainment, we’re to have a smashing feast.
There’s cucumber sandwiches, with the crusts removed of course
and lots of lovely champers; Pater has a useful source.

No Mater won’t be coming – poor old dear has lost the plot.
this morning as I practiced, she insisted it was rot.
Some cretin bushy poet --- yes the ones that always rhyme,
has turned her to the dark side – which I’m sure must be a crime.

Very clever, Terry! Poetry does have its "upper class!"

Reminds me of the cheesecloth-clad woman with dinner plates for earrings (am I stereotyping here??) who said to me after my CD was released: "Why did you do a CD instead of a book? I would much prefer to read a book than listen to a CD."

Then she looked at the CD and (with the air of someone to whom it suddenly became clear) said: "Oh, BUSH poetry! Well, I now I understand. People who like BUSH poetry probably need to have it read to them!"

I kid you not - that is a true story.

Cheers

Thanks Shelley

We shouldn't take ourselves too seriously should we.
It doesn't worry me what other people write - but we shouldn't be above having a bit of lighthearted fun with each other now and again either.
If you remember, it was me who suggested that we have a spot for anyone who wanted to try free verse, because it was obvious to me some were itching to have a go.

Cheers

Terry

Isn't free verse just prose that's been written line by line?

Give me poems that rhyme every time.
