A PERFECT TEN

A PERFECT TEN

A put down I had suffered with result of the last game
despite points deficit of only twenty,
as a loser I was quickly cast into the frame
with snide remarks flowing fast and plenty.

And this game was shaping up to turn out just as bad,
seventeen words on the board and fifty points behind,
fear was very real that this outcome would be sad,
a Scrabble non achiever I’d forever be assigned.

It wasn’t all my doing though, I had not one good letter,
two ns plus five ts gave me little scope,
scores of three or four each turn, couldn’t do much better,
my neck primed and ready, just waiting for a rope.

But suddenly, there appeared a gap amid the fog
courtesy of double word and triple letter scores
also, opposition stumbling in a bog,
my ship of words sailed on to friendly shores.

Finally, with two turns left, my score had hit the front,
thirty points gained from these last goes,
opponent left there spluttering, left out of the hunt,
a study like the Emperor’s new clothes.

The conclusive scorecard saw me crowned ten points ahead
and grudgingly given some respect,
triumph from adversity when all is done and said,
I know now why a score of ten is judged perfect.
