WHEN MICHAEL HUSSEY MADE HIS TON

Post by Terry » Sun Nov 28, 2010 1:55 pm

This one was a rush job, needed to strike while the iron was hot so to speak - Terry

WHEN MICHAEL HUSSEY MADE HIS TON
The eastern scribes were ranting and they had Huss in their sights,
he’s had his day they reckoned and were printing his last rites.
And commentators over there were baying for his blood,
they wanted to replace him with some other likely dud.

Selectors knew his worth as did his skipper and the pup,
and spoke about his past deeds, as they tried to shut them up.
He’s saved us from defeat before and so he will again,
and help us win this bloom’en test, if we can dodge the rain.

The English batted first while knocking up a modest score,
with Aussie wickets tumbling, it now seemed enough or more.
As Hussey strode out to the crease to face a ball with sheen,
two million eyes out west, were glued onto their TV screen.

The first ball whistled past his bat a fraction from the edge,
which caused some English sniggers as they handed out a sledge.
A million breaths were being held throughout the golden west,
for people right across the state were tuned into the Test.

And soon we were all cheering as he opened his account,
convinced that now he’d made a start his confidence would mount.
And even those out in the bush; a wireless near their ear,
were with him there in spirit and some darn near shed a tear.

The runs began to flow at last as Hussey stood up tall,
he’d now been joined by Haddin and they both attacked the ball.
And what a grand old sight it was with these two at the crease,
the journo’s had gone silent, would such wonders ever cease?

Excitement was at fever pitch, their best form had been found,
and balls were being blasted all around the Gabba ground.
The media now changed their tune and tried to bluff it out,
but looking rather foolish from the rubbish that they spout.

A nervousness had settled on supporters in the west,
the game was in the balance as the English gave their best.
You could have heard a pin drop as he sought that final run,
and we were right there with him as the old Huss neared his ton.

And when that final ball was struck to reach that magic mark,
a cheer rang out across the land and echoed through each park.
And journo’s ceased their chattering as though struck dumb at last,
while others were back pedaling and losing ground real fast.

The accolades flowed thick and fast from knockers who’d lost face,
along with all well wishers who had offered theirs with grace.
Then Huss reminded one and all the game was still not won,
but long will we recall this day when Hussey made his ton.

Thanks Merv,
Yes it certainly was a great innings and under enormous pressure.
The poem could do with a bit of a polish, but as I said I wanted to get it out while that innings was still fresh in our minds,

Cheers Terry

Yes I will put my hand up as one of the Hussey knockers, Terry . . . but kudos where it is deserved as without his big ton we'd be starring down the barrel of defeat . . pity we couldn't nail them to the wall today. Oh well. A competitive series we will all enjoy is upon us. Now the heat is on M. North and the pup with the dodgy back . . oh, and then there's the skipper and the short ball.

Cheers, Marty

G/day Marty,
There are a few in that team who need dropping before Huss, you can see the cupboards nearly bare in all compartments can't you.
As You say North is hit or miss he gets a century of nothing, At the moment Clarke is an even bigger worry, he hasn't made a decent score in yonks. The bowling is the same once the wicket settles down we don't have anyone who even looks likely to take a wicket.
Still we shouldn't complain we have had such a great run now over a fair number of years haven't we.

Cheers Terry

The old Huss's ton sort of pales into insignificance a bit Now doesn't it - Terry

Hi Everybody,
The old Huss has done it again, so far over 500 runs (almost half the total runs scored by Australia so far) in this series, 6 innings of over 50 breaking an 133 year old ashes record Plus 2 centuries.
And all the so called experts wanted to drop him, Good on yer Huss.

Yep . . . credit where it's due, Terry - maybe Mr Cricket read your inspiring poem cos he hasn't taken a backward step since! And I sat down today with a cold beer after lunch today and watched the Aussies finish them Poms off at the WACA - clinically and quickly and it's great to go into Christmas with the Ashes still alive and with a spring in our step let's bring Boxing Day on at the MCG. If we win the Auld Urn back now I'll wish I could've had a piece of the 11 dollars on offer at SportsBet after day One of this test for the Aussies to win the series. They are now favourites. I think without the left-handed Hussey we'd up 'you-know-what' Creek without a paddle.

G/day Marty,
Perhaps we should all get together and write a poem about each member in the team, at the moment there are three or four players carrying the whole team.
I always felt there were a few batsmen in the team I would have dropped before Mr. Cricket and that includes Micheal Clarke.

Cheers mate - Terry

G'day Terry, great poem, love it eh! & Hussey has always been one of my favorites, dosen't matter how great they are, they will always go through a slump, even the great Don went through a 'minor' slump.
